Research Sourcing Review

A Certificate That Does Not Match Your Lot Number Proves Nothing. Most Buyers Never Check.

A Certificate of Analysis is a report on one batch. Not a product. Not a brand. Not every vial that will ever carry the same name. Here is the one line that turns a PDF into evidence.

Every lot is its own synthesis run. Its certificate belongs to that run and nothing else.

You ask a supplier for proof. They send a certificate. It has a lab logo, a chromatogram, and a big number near the top. It looks official. You file it and move on.

Here is the question almost nobody asks: is this certificate about the vial I am holding?

Because a certificate describes one lot. One synthesis run, tested on one date. The next lot is a different run. It can come out cleaner. It can come out worse. The old certificate does not know.

ORA Labs matches the certificate to the lot.

Independent third-party Certificates of Analysis, matched to each lot, kept with your orders in your account.

1Imagine buying a used car with someone else's inspection report

Same make. Same model. Same color. The report is spotless. It is just for a different car.

Nobody would accept that. Yet buyers in this category accept the equivalent every day: one good certificate, reused across every batch a product ever ships.

Same name on the label is not the same material in the vial. The lot number is what connects them.

2How a reused certificate happens

Testing every lot costs money every time. Testing once and reusing the PDF costs money once. You can guess which one is more common.

Nobody has to lie for this to happen. The certificate is real. The result is real. It is simply about a batch that sold out months ago.

  • A date that is a year old on a product that has restocked several times since.
  • No lot number at all, so it cannot be matched to anything.
  • A lot number that is not printed on your vial or your order.

3What lot-matched actually means

ORA Labs publishes independent third-party Certificates of Analysis on its Lab Reports page as each lot is tested. Purity verified by HPLC. Identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. Each report tied to its lot.

Here is the part most suppliers would leave out: not every product has a published report yet. ORA says so plainly, and for any product you can email for the certificate on your specific lot number.

A supplier that tells you which reports are not posted yet is a supplier whose posted reports you can believe.

The lot number travels with the vial. The certificate should travel with the lot.

4The ten-second habit

When an order arrives, do one thing before anything else.

  • Find the lot number on the vial or the order.
  • Open the certificate for that product.
  • Compare the two codes. Identical, you have evidence. Different or missing, you have a brochure.

Ten seconds. It is the cheapest quality control you will ever run.

Pulled up an old certificate from a previous supplier. The date was fourteen months before my order. Never noticed.

Ours had no lot number at all. Which I now realise means it could have been about anything.

The used car comparison is exactly right. Nobody would accept that anywhere else.

Respect that they say which reports are not posted yet. Most places would just leave the gap.

Comparing the two codes is now the first thing I do when anything arrives.
